First Peoples' Cultural Council

Silent Speaker Language Hands-on Workbook

The First Peoples’ Cultural Council (FPCC) is a First Nations-run Crown Corporation with the mandate to support the revitalization of Aboriginal language, arts and culture in British Columbia. The corporation provides funding and resources to communities, monitors the status of First Nations languages and develops policy recommendations for First Nations leadership and government.

As many First Peoples’ languages are learned and passed down verbally, the FPCC needed a workbook to support learning in a highly-visual and interactive format. Backyard Creative designed and art directed the Reclaiming My Language: A Course for Silent Speakers workbook to be used on screen (i.e. read digitally as an interactive PDF) and as a printed piece, while addressing accessibility for a wide range of learners. Our objectives were to keep things as simple as possible to encourage learners to record their progress, and to present a lot of information without overwhelming them.

Lots of places for notes and clear instructions make Reclaiming My Language: A Course for Silent Speakers easy to use. The workbook was designed to complement I Am Taking My Language Back, another FPCC workbook published in 2015.
