Refining a Vibrant Library Brand
The North Vancouver City Library (NVCL) engaged Backyard Creative to refine its brand through the creation of design templates, and a graphic standards document to help support the workflow of their in-house design team.
The project began with a discovery process including a thorough brand audit. We uncovered the desire to uplift the NVCL brand by updating the logo colour palette, and extending the brand with a secondary brand colour palette. The new colour palette reflects the original logo colours, but in much more lively hues, to align with the brand’s modern lines and fun, vibrant personality. The secondary colour palette allows for expandability and customization for the library’s various programming streams.
NVCL required printed materials for various programming needs, as well as graphics and digital assets for its website. Various print templates were designed, to enable library staff members to easily access and use the templates.
The digital templates reflect a more refined look, to help simplify the user experience on the website. Both print and digital templates introduce the use of a modular graphic element, to add new visual layers to the brand. Since so many brand materials were given a refresh, we also redesigned the NVCL’s library cards.
The NVCL graphic standards document outlines all the brand refinements and established brand details, from colours and fonts to logo placement and graphic element use. As the NVCL in-house team continues to roll out its refreshed brand across the library, the graphic standards help to set the continuity required to maintain the brand over time.
