Local, Ethical and Sustainable Cheese Label Redesign

Little Qualicum Cheeseworks (LQC) is located on Morningstar Farm in Parksville, BC. The makers of a broad range of cheeses since 2001, they are widely popular on Vancouver Island and the Lower Mainland. We were excited to be asked to update their labels to make them easier to read, better align with the existing brand and improve the shelf presence.

As the original label featured a cabin, we took the texture from the wood and re-worked the label creating a template that would work in both French/English (as per Canadian standards). We have always loved the way they package their Brie on upcycled cedar scraps (from a local craftsman) which is what gave us the idea to abstract the cabin by simply using the wood texture.

Their previous label felt crowded and didn’t have room for all necessary information. By putting the ‘cabin’ in the background of the label, we were able to keep the notion of the farm buildings but allow the LQC word mark to stand out a bit more. We also added a tagline “Handcrafted with milk from our own grass-fed cows!”after learning about their industry differentiator in our discovery process.

The labels now proudly differentiate their wide range of flavours in the grocery store and in their tasting room. If you’re a lover of cheese, go visit the Morningstar Farm at Little Qualicum Cheeseworks.
