First Peoples' Cultural Council
Language Preservation Program for First Peoples
The First Peoples’ Cultural Council (FPCC) is a First Nations-run Crown Corporation with the mandate to support the revitalization of Aboriginal language, arts and culture in British Columbia. The corporation provides funding and resources to communities, monitors the status of First Nations languages and develops policy recommendations for First Nations leadership and government.
With support from Chief Atahm School, the FPCC produced an extensive resource handbook on Immersion Language Nests for use by school administrators, coordinators, language teachers and other community members throughout BC.
Backyard Creative directed and designed a format for the handbook to be used on screen and as a printed piece, taking into consideration accessibility for a wide range of readers. Highlighted footnotes, photos with captions and tip boxes were used to break up the content and make it easy to read. We also incorporated a Canadian-designed syllabics font called Huronia on the cover and footer of the document. This font best displays the 32 First Nations languages still in use, and showcases the range of languages that could benefit from a Language Nest program.
