LOCO BC

Buy local: Small changes create BIG impacts

LOCO BC is a growing alliance of local companies working to strengthen communities, grow the local economy and build strong, sustainable businesses. Well aligned with our values, Backyard Creative has been a member of LOCO BC since its inception in 2009 and we jumped at the opportunity to help communicate the value of buying local.

For LOCO BC’s second annual Buy Local Week (December 2-8, 2013), Backyard Creative was engaged to create an infographic that celebrates consumers’ choice to shop locally for both their business and personal needs, and showcases the cascade of positive effects their choice generates. Our key objectives for the infographic were to make consumers feel good about shopping local—and not feel badly for choosing big box stores—and to highlight some recent Canadian data about the impacts of buying local.

Working collaboratively with the LOCO BC team, we established a design direction, pulled statistics from research, distilled and edited content, and illustrated a compelling infographic reflecting existing LOCO BC branding. The infographic was designed to be shared online and printed as a poster by LOCO BC members. It was also featured in a buy local special of The Province and Vancouver Sun newspapers, and used as a smaller rack card and as informative slides to support Buy Local Week marketing and media outreach.

To our delight, many months later, you can still see this poster hanging proudly in LOCO members’ store windows and offices around the lower mainland.
