Why giving back matters to us

Giving has been a priority at Backyard Creative since we started. We see giving as a way to not only support the organizations and causes we care about, but to also lift small organizations up as they grow and evolve. And, it feels great! Giving lifts our spirits because we know we’re contributing to the greater good.

Living our values is one of our key drivers, and giving helps us reinforce those values. For us, giving includes donating both our money and time. It’s exciting to follow our favourite organizations as they expand their reach and impact. Knowing we played a small part in their success is super rewarding.

What does our membership to 1% for the Planet mean?

We make our biggest contributions through our 1% for the Planet membership. They support businesses and organizations to give to environmental nonprofits. Business members, like us, join their network and donate the equivalent of 1% of annual gross sales, through either a monetary donation or in-kind work. Our involvement with 1% aligns with our respect for nature (one of our core values).

Our 1% contributions began in 2017. The two organizations we love and donate time and money to consistently are the Georgia Strait Alliance and LOCO BC. Protecting the waters and animals living in the Georgia Strait hits close to home. Since our founder, Lisa, is based in Nanaimo, it’s important for us to look after the ecosystems we love spending time in.

Encouraging others to shop local has been one of our passions for many years. We understand the positive impacts the local economy can have on our communities. Since COVID-19 hit, LOCO BC’s work is more important now than ever. It’s encouraging to see more people supporting the buy local movement as small businesses struggle to survive during the pandemic.

Why giving back is good for business

Another way we give is through our Good Neighbour award. We donate work in-kind to one or two small organizations with great visions and ambitions, yet small budgets. We donate up to $5,000 in services annually, working around our more time-sensitive work. Interested in applying for the Good Neighbour award? Read more about our super simple application process.

Supporting our team’s causes

Aside from how competent and amazing our team members are, they also care deeply about their local communities. They donate money and time to the organizations in their “backyards”. We want to show our team how much we appreciate their commitment to community (another of our core values).

On Giving Tuesday in December 2020, we matched our team members’ donations to the Nelson Community Food Centre, the Thornton Creek Hatchery in Ucluelet, the ALS Society of Alberta, and Nanaimo Foodshare

This small gesture was another way to foster goodwill amongst our team, and support the many nonprofits that need support during the pandemic. Our team members were so appreciative. We can’t wait to find other creative ways to support our team’s giving efforts!
