This month we’re featuring Sarita, one of the newest members of the Backyard Creative team! Sarita is a collaborative, down-to-earth, adventurous designer who was drawn to Backyard Creative’s values of supporting local, small businesses and environmental sustainability.
Sarita’s Alignment with Backyard Creative
She’s super aligned with our team and has really embraced our work culture and virtual business model. She says she appreciates our efforts to find team members that share our values, and that we uphold our values in everything we do (thanks Sarita!), which makes work feel more like a mission than a task. She likes to think of our work as people working for people.
Get to know Sarita
Sarita studied a bit of business, science and art in university, ultimately choosing to focus on visual art at Vancouver Island University. She discovered graphic design after her first year, since the visual art and graphic design programs were housed in the same building. She found that she liked the applied nature of graphic art and working toward a common goal, so she switched programs, earned her Bachelor of Arts in Graphic Design, and never looked back. Refining complex ideas into digestible pieces is now one of her design superpowers!
Recently, Sarita had a lot of fun collaborating with Lisa on a Backyard Creative Manifesto poster. She got to work on some hand rendered elements for the piece, which is her favourite way to create. The posters were silk screened by a local screen printer, giving them a tactile quality and making them a special keepsake for our team.
Sarita lives in Ucluelet, on the West Coast of Vancouver Island, where she’s surrounded by jaw-dropping nature. Movement in the elements gets Sarita inspired and she loves to run, bike, surf and practice yoga. Her close-knit, outdoorsy, environmentally-minded community and having her friends and activities minutes from her doorstep are what keep her in “Ukee”.
To guide her through 2020, she chose productivity as her inspirational word for the year. She works from home, where (as our whole team knows) it can be easy to get distracted by other activities. She’s working on removing distractions so she can carve out more uninterrupted time for challenging creative projects, and increase her productivity.
The Backyard Creative team is enjoying getting to know Sarita and we look forward to working with her on many more projects!
